Corneal tissue is found to be another latent location and recurrent source of herpes simplex virus type I besides trigeminal ganglion (First Shandong Provincial Prize for Progress in Science & technology in 1996). Based on this theory, herpes simplex keratitis is treated with penetrating keratoplasty, and the recurrence rate is decreased from 100% to 6%.

A rabbit fungal keratitis model is established with epikeratophakia method, which ideally mimics the natural behavior of fungi in human corneas. On the basis of the innovated theory that different fungal species show different growth patterns in cornea, creative selection of lamellar keratoplasty for fungal keratitis significantly improves the long-term success rate of surgical treatment. The above investigations are supported by National Natural Science Foundation of China and Key Program of the Department of Science and Technology of Shandong Province.

Prof. Xie Lixin, as Senior Instructor, presents an instruction course titled ^Diagnosis and Management of Fungal Keratitis ̄ at the American Academy of Ophthalmology Annual Meeting, 2006

Pars plana capsulectomy and vitrectomy is developed to treat pediatric cataract, which decreases the occurrence rate of posterior capsular opacification from 100% to 8.1%

A series of application basic and clinical studies on cataract surgeries are conducted, which achieves high productivity in terms of publications and presentations at international meetings, as well as First Shandong Provincial Prize for Progress in Science & Technology in 2005
